Churachandpur, December 08 2023:
Two passenger vehicles (Tata Sumo) operating between Aizawl and Churachandpur skidded off the road on Thursday night due to slippery ground condition, leading to death of at least three people.
According to members of LQMCOS Association which operates the passenger service between Aizawl and Churachandpur, a Tata Sumo (MZ02/9093) carrying 10 passengers rolled down the steep and rugged hills while negotiating a slippery road between Khawkawn and Khodungsei village around 7 pm, killing two people on the spot and leaving eight others seriously injured.
The deceased have been identified as driver Mangboi alias MB Zomi, son of Zamchinlam of Ngathal Churachandpur and Franky Laramkima of Hmuia Veng Churachandpur.
The second vehicle (Tata Sumo registration number could not be established yet) met with the accident around 8-9 pm at a spot between Pawlhrang and Ngopa, leading to the dead of one passenger.
In both the cases, the vehicles skidded off the road and rolled down the hills about 400/500 feet, stated the sources.
Rescue works are being undertaken by volunteers of Young Mizo Association (YMA) on a war footing mode.
Sources further said that the road construction work between Seling and Khawkawn is being taken up by NHIDL Company Limited and this is the prime factor for frequent accidents particularly at time when there is ceaseless rain.
