Imphal, May 23 2024:
Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) Farmers' Wing will be holding a meeting on May 29 to help farmers and prepare the affected farmlands for cultivation and harvest.
Addressing the media at COCOMI's Lamphelpat office.
Thursday afternoon, Farmers' Wing convenor Konthoujam Thoiba remarked that since the conflict broke out on May 3 last year, the people have been suffering with no end in sight.
Owing to the conflict, many farmers faced difficulties in farming and harvesting their crops.
As such, COCOMI Farmers' Wing held a meeting to help farmers to step foot in their farmlands and farm.
Observing the impending harvest season, Thoiba said valley farmers are restless over the unsolved conflict, while the government is yet to take up any action to calm the farmers.
Many farmers in the periphery areas are apprehensive of going to their own farmlands.
Thus, COCOMI would be holding a meeting with representatives of farmers in vulnerable areas and farmer welfare bodies, at Manipur Press Club on May 29 around 11 to discuss the issues at hand.
He continued that the issues up for discussion would be to ensure a successful harvest season with the agriculture department taking up the requisite measures for the same.
Additionally, the mobilisation and organisation team of COCOMI along with the Farmers' Wing is trying to ensure the placement of village volunteers in red zones areas to allow the farmers to farm in a safe manner.
He then appealed to the state government to deploy state forces in the vulnerable locations and allow the farmers to farm peacefully.
