Imphal, June 10 2024:
Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has refuted the allegation that the Congress party signed an agreement with Kuki organisations for considering grant of a separate administration if the party comes to power at the Centre.
Addressing the media at Congress Bhawan, here, on Sunday night, MPCC working president Kh Devbrata said that the news clipping of the Congress candidate for Outer Manipur Parliamentary Constituency Alfred Kann-gam Arthur signing agreement with Kuki Inpi Manipur and its constituent organisations for granting separate administration, which went viral on social media is baseless.
It is unfortunate that such false allegations are raised against the party and published in a local media, he said, categorically stating there was no such agreement.
Regarding the allegation, Devbrata informed that on receipt of the news clipping, the party talked with the candidate and several leaders.
After finding that there was no such agreement signed, the party came to know through the Cyber Crime police station that the news clipping was first shared on social media through a fake account for which MPCC Legal Department will now file a complaint to deal with the fake account.
Expressing concern over the escalating tension in Jiribam, he said that the situation in the border district is akin to ethnic cleansing of the Meeteis.
Considering the strategic location of Jiribam and its sensitivity, the state government should have taken up effective measures to prevent any such kind of escalations.
Congress party strongly condemns the government if they are thinking that paying some compensation to the affected families would resolve the matter.
Even if there are a smaller number of security personnel, the government could always arrange reinforcement of Central security forces from neighbouring state Assam and prevent escalation of the violence, the working president opined.
He said that evacuating the people and leaving their properties to the mercy of the militants is blunder on the part of the government besides underscoring complete failure of the intelligence network both of the state and the Centre.
Devbraita also raised posers over failure of the government to make prior security arrangement despite knowing that the armed Kuki militants are grouping for attack in Jiribam.
