24-hour shutdown cripples trade activities in Imphal city

Imphal, May 20 2024:
The 24-hour shutdown called by Bazar Shop Owners' Community affected trade activities in Imphal city on Monday.
Shops and small businesses in Paona and Thangal Keithel remained closed but the three Khwairamband Ima Keithel remained open and trade activities were normal in these women's markets.
According to a statement issued by Bazar Shop Owners' Community, the shutdown was called in view of the problems faced by shops in the market area in recent days in order to draw attention of the government for taking up necessary measures to address the situation.
The markets and business establishments were closed in protest against repeated attacks and extortion bids.
The supply of essential commodities to various districts was also disrupted as the warehouses of wholesalers at Thangal Bazar and MG Avenue downed their shutters to extend their support to the shutdown call.
The Paona Bazaar Masjid road, which thrives during morning hours, was unusually quiet on Monday.
The retail markets at the Paona International Market were also shut.
Sporadic attacks by unidentified attackers on the shopkeepers and traders took place during the past few days.
There were also several reports of extortion from businessmen.
