Historical, cultural linkages of SEA, Manipur discussed

Department of South East Asian (SEA) Studies, Manipur University organised a lecture programme on 'South East Asia and Manipur: Historical and Cultural Linkages' at the university on Monday.
Inauguration programme of the lecture, which was delivered by retired IPS officer S Manglemjao Singh, had Manipur University vice chancellor Prof N Lokendro Singh as chief guest and Department of SEA Studies head Prof Maisnam Bobo (Chinglen) Singh as the functional president.
Prof N Lokendro Singh, in his inaugural speech, talked about the Tai connection of Manipur and South East Asia especially with the Shan tribes of Burma.
He also encouraged the faculties, young scholars, and students to carry forward further research on such areas.
In his talk, Manglemjao Singh recalled about how the united forces of the Pong kingdom and the Meitei kingdom defeated Khampat in the late 15th century.
His work is primarily based on 'Sorarel Machana Khunkhumba', a Shan chronicle found in Manipur.
He elaborated on how after the battle, the two kings namely Chaophahum Kekhomba of Pong and King Kiyamba of Manipur celebrated the victory by exchanging various gifts and sharing a meal together signifying the healthy relations between the two kingdoms.
The battle also led to inking of the Boundary Treaty of Meitei-Pong of 1470 in history of Manipur, traversing the demarcation points and identifying the boundary between the two kingdoms.
