Imphal, April 27 2024:
As elsewhere, the office of Registrar of Manipur Veterinary Council and Directorate of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Services Manipur observed the World Veterinary Day, at Farmers' Training Hall of the Veterinary complex in Sanjenthong on Saturday.
Observed under the theme of 'Veterinarians are essential health workers'; the event was attended by Veterinary and Animal Husbandry secretary Michael Achom as chief guest.
Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Services director Dr RK Khogendrajit and retired director Dr S Joykumar also attended the observance.
In his speech, Veterinary and Animal Husbandry secretary Michael Achom informed that the government is trying to upgrade the Veterinary, in addition to equipping it with all necessities.
However, there is need for the Directorate to consult with the higher authorities, considering that the private sector is blooming in this field.
If the Department fails to provide excellent service, it will soon be overtaken by private sector, he remarked.
Speaking on the occasion, director Dr RK Khogendrajit emphasised on the role of veterinarians which include health care services for livestock, assisting the economy with the animal sector as resource and preventing the spread of diseases from animal to human.
The animal sector roughly contributes 4.11 per cent to the country's GDP, while agriculture and allied sector contributes around 25-30 per cent.
Although the budgetary allocation to the department may be small, it has been carrying out routine vaccination and spreading awareness, he stated, while adding that the department will continue to provide anti-rabies vaccination.
Highlighting the Hospital Management System of the Veterinary Hospital, he informed that a monitoring system will soon be installed.
He continued that while there is need for gynae, surgery and medicine doctors in the hospital, efforts will be taken up to send doctors to the district hospitals as well.
