RIMS hosts CME on paediatric cardiac surgery

A Continuing Medical-Education (CME) cum workshop on Paediatric Cardiac Surgery was held at Banting Hall of RIMS, Imphal on Monday.
The event was organised by the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery Unit of RIMS in association with Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram, NHM Manipur, and Association of Surgeons of India (ASI), Manipur State Chapter.
Inaugurating the CME programme, RIMS director Prof G Sunil Kumar announced the commencement of paediatric cardiac surgeries in a government setup, starting with two cases scheduled for Tuesday.
He noted that while RIMS, a 50-year-old institution, faces challenges due to a shortage of manpower, it boasts state-of-the-art facilities.
The presence of three skilled cardiac surgeons at RIMS is a promising development, and if the upcoming surgeries are successful, RIMS plans to offer free open-heart surgeries to the public of Manipur and neighbouring states, he informed.
The director expressed his gratitude to the resource persons, who have travelled long distance to support and guide the team at RIMS.
He also thanked the team from Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram for their unwavering support, and acknowledged the hard work of RIMS medical superintendent Prof N Sanjib, organising secretary of the workshop Prof Th Chito, and RIMS dean (Academics) Prof Brogen Singh Akoijam, in establishing the state-of-the-art facility.
He wished the team of surgeons success in their upcoming procedures.
The CME programme saw the participation of RIMS deputy director (administration) RK Mecolt, heads of departments, faculty members, RIMS College of Nursing principal, invitees, officials, staff, and students.
The event marked a significant step forward for RIMS in providing advanced cardiac care and surgical treatment to children, potentially transforming the healthcare landscape in the region.
