26th Students' Emancipation Day observed

The 26th Students' Emancipation Day was today observed at Moirang Multipurpose Hr Sec School, Moirang, under the aegis of the All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) Bishnupur District Committee.
The union recounted the event of September 30, 1973 wherein Haobijam Ibohal was mercilessly shot to death by police.
Haobijam Ibohal was a student of Moirang College then and was participating in an agitation demanding the Government to address the problem of various shortages at Moirang Multipurpose Higher Secondary School.
The function recalled that even after the killing of student Ibohal, the then Manipur State Government failed to fulfil the demands and so on May 26, 1979 the students of the institute took up the issue and staged a hunger strike.
Five students who took part in the agitation were arrested by Moirang police.
Some students were injured in police firing on the protesters.
In the crackdown, Urikhinbam Khelen and Kumam Sharat were critically wounded and later they succumbed to injuries.
Since then AMSU has been observing the Students' Emancipation Day to pay homage to the martyred students.
As part of the observance programme, floral tributes were paid to the martyred students.
President of AMSU HQ, Sanasham Subhachandra attended the function as the chief guest while president of AMSU Bpr dist Committee Th Kabichandra was the functional president and principal of Moirang Multipurpose Hr Sec School S Kumar and president of ANUL Lumlangdong Bpr dist comt O Sumati were the guests of honour.
