When Manik Sarkar, Chief Minister of Tripura gave a commitment to lift AFSPA from his State, I guess the Chief Minister of Manipur also has the equal capability of removing the draconian act from Manipur to bring peace said Kshetri Bimola, Professor of Political Science Manipur University.
She was speaking at the 17th Meira Paibi Day observation held at Khurai Salanthong on Thursday.
Bimola mentioned about the significant role of the women torch bearer since the AFSPA was imposed in the valley area and the army personnel committed certain atrocities.
She also stated that AFSPA was imposed in Manipur at the hill district first by 1960 and later in the valley districts.
In the hills, a lady Chanu Rose was raped by BSF personnel and the lady committed suicide and it happened after AFSPA was imposed.
In the valley a person was killed at Patsoi in 1980 under AFSPA.
Since then the women torch bearers association was formed under the banner of All Manipur Nupi Kanglup to face the atrocities often committed by Army personnel against the civilians, Professor Bimola.
She also said that the women torch bearers will give full support to the government towards land encroachment issue at Dzukou and Kozurii.
The observation day was organised by Meira Paibi Day Observation Committee and attended by representatives from various civil society organisation like Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur, Meira Paibi Welfare Association Kangleipak, Manipur Kanba Ima Lup, Kangleipak Lamjing Apunba Apunba Meira Lup, Women Association for Socio Economic Development, Iramdam Kanba Apunba Lup.
Floral tributes were showered upon the Statue of the Women Torch Bearer as a part of the observation Day.
