Thoubal, May 03 2024:
Remembering the day when armed Kuki narco-terrorists attacked the Meetei community on May 3 last year, Meetei Council Moreh (MCM) observed the day as "Moreh da Kuki na Meetei da Landarakkhiba 366 suba numit" at Wangjing Kodompokpi Sports Complex, on Friday.
The event which was marked by observance of 2-minute silent in honour of those who sacrificed their lives for upholding Manipur's 'territorial integrity, also had the participants raising slogans Such as demand for resettlement in their ancestral homes in Moreh, unitedly combat elements inimical to interest of Manipur in general and the Meetei community in particular, etc.
The participants included Meeteis of Moreh who have been rendered homeless and are presently taking refuge at various relief camps in the state.
Speaking at the event, president M Thoiba highlighted that since its establishment in 1995, MCM worked for the welfare of the Meetei community in Moreh and mediated in defusing tensions between various groups such as Tamil and Kuki communities, Paite and Kuki in Moreh, and between Naga and Kuki.
Stating as unfortunate, the attack by Kukis' against the Meeteis in Moreh on May 3 last year, he urged the Kuki residents of Moreh to acknowledge the efforts made by the Meeteis to foster harmonious relationships among the diverse communities in the border town.
Thoiba also called upon organisations of different communities in Moreh, who understand the Meeteis' innocence in the matter, to take proactive steps towards resolving the dispute between the Meeteis and the Kukis.
While maintaining that Meeteis in Moreh never confronted the Kukis, Thoiba expressed that Kukis ought to retract their statement that the Meeteis should not return to Moreh till the government resolves the ongoing crisis amicably.
Elected representatives must earnestly address concerns of the populace and fulfil their responsibilities effectively.
Moreover, the state government should confide to the public if it is incapable of restoring peace in the state, he suggested.
Thoiba also suspected hidden agenda of the central government using the Kuki militants, as was evident by cessation of firing during the election period and resumption of hostility immediately after the elections concluded.
Rather than prolonging the humanitarian crisis the centre should take steps for an early resolution of the conflict between the two communities, he stressed.
