Imphal, August 23 2015:
Expressing grief over the alleged maltreatment of juvenile hunger strikers who were undergoing treatment at RIMS, the Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR) reminded to all concerned that it is mandatory for police and everyone dealing with the juveniles to fully adhere to the fundamental principles as laid down in the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Rules, 2007.In any circumstances, the dignity of the juveniles should not be undermined.
In a statement issued by its member K Maharabi Singh, MCPCR expressed unhappiness over the recent decision to withdraw routine medical checkups and ambulance service by the Directorate of Health Services, Govt of Manipur.
The commission recommended resumption of medical check-up to students on hunger strike particularly those juveniles.
Medical service, being included among essential services, should not be called off or stopped by the authority concerned on the pretext that some doctors, nursing staff on duty and ambulance vans were attacked by protesters.
The State should give adequate security protection.
The MCPCR further urged protesters to exempt medical service from the purview of the strike and no harm should be done to them.
