Imphal, September 18 2024:
In response to non-payment of two months' salaries, staff and nurses of the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) staged protest on Wednesday and threatened to cease work if their entitlements are not released by Thursday.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the protest held near the JNIMS medical superintendent's office, Trained Nurses' Association president Ranjita accepted that the ongoing crisis has impacted all for the past 16 months.
The non-payment of monthly salaries to JNIMS staff and nurses has further exacerbated their difficulties.
While the healthcare workers do not wish to engage in protests, they feel compelled to do so as they are strug gling to support families and make ends meet.
She further said that they have been waiting for the MGEL process, as informed by the relevant authorities, which is cited for delay in salary payments.
However, the fact that salaries have not been disbursed for the past two months has aggravated the situation for staff and nurses.
Under these circumstances, it has become increasingly difficult for nurses to provide adequate care to patients.
Ranjita also stated that they are prepared to intensify the protests by shutting down OPD and emergency services if their pending salaries are not paid by Thursday.
She also urged the hospital authorities to ensure that salaries are released by 10th of every month.
