Imphal, May 23 2024:
Pointing out that media persons have been advocating rights of workers and their social security through publication and other medium, deputy labour commissioner Elangbam Tomba observed that even those working in media houses, right from editors to support staff, may not be availing benefits of Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) under the Ministry of Labour.
According to a statement issued by All Manipur Trade Unions' Council (AMTUC), the plight of the media persons was highlighted by Elangbam Tomba in a felicitation programme of Dr Ambedkar Award 2024 winners hosted by the Council.
In his speech, Tomba said that though Employees' State Insurance Act, 1949 is implemented in the state, media persons are yet to be covered under it.
It is unfortunate that social security is yet to be provided to workers including those working in Imphal Municipal Council and media persons, he denounced.
Speaking at the programme, AMTUC general secretary A Premkumar Singh stressed the need for workers to strive for betterment of their own.
If the workers do not highlight their grievances then none will help them, he opined, while appealing to work hard and demand proper wages.
Meanwhile, AMTUC executive member Johnson urged authorities concerned to extend the facilities of ESIC and EPF to people working in media houses.
The award winners who were felicitated by AMTUC included its joint secretary Koijam Tomba, RIMS Nurses' Association Lamphelpat (RNAL) treasurer Yumnam Binasakhi Devi and Safai Karmachari Sangh Manipur general secretary Ngairangbam Baby Devi, the statement added.
