Imphal, September 04 2023:
Meitei Diaspora Worldwide, along with their supporters, submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging to intervene immediately and quell the escalating violence in Manipur as the state grapples with its fifth month of turmoil.
The memorandum pointed that the ongoing violence in Manipur has not only disrupted the lives of its citizens but also threatens to cast a shadow over India's significant developmental achievements and its preparations to host the G20 summit.
The social fabric of the state has been severely fractured, prompting the diaspora to appeal for decisive measures to prevent further deterioration of the situation.
One of the most concerning consequences of the turmoil is the dire situation faced by Manipur's farmers, who form the backbone of the society.
Recent tragic incidents, such as the shooting of 37-year-old farmer SAlam Jotin on August 29, while working in his field in Bishnupur district, highlight the extreme peril faced by these individuals.
The displacement of many farmers, who are now residing in relief camps, further exacerbates the situation.
Manipur stands on the brink of a conflict-induced famine and starvation, with farmers unable to tend to their fields despite the presence of security forces meant to protect them, the memorandum said.
Beyond the impact on farmers; the ongoing violence has also disrupted the education of thousands of students, forcing them to abandon their studies.
This not only hampers their current education but also casts a dark cloud over their future prospects.
Education is the bedrock upon which personal advancement and development are built, and its forcible interruption deprives these students of their potential and aspirations.
The repercussions of this extend far beyond individual lives, hindering the progress and prosperity of Manipuri society.
While acknowledging the intricate complexities of Manipuri society, with the Meiteis, Nagas, and Kuki communities each possessing unique identities and aspirations, the petition underscored the role of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's office in ensuring the protection and progress of every Indian citizen.
Further stressing on the importance of initiation of meaningful dialogues among these communities to foster understanding and collaboration, ultimately paving the way for peaceful coexistence, the Diaspora Worldwide and their supporters beseeched the Prime Minister to personally engage with the Chief Minister of Manipur and relevant authorities to restore normalcy in the state, stating that as suffering by the innocent people of Manipur is beyond imagination, it is the collective responsibility of all to ensure their safety and well-being.
In a heartfelt appeal to Prime Minister Modi, the memorandum also requested his visit to Manipur to meet with the affected population and witness the consequences of the ongoing violence and turmoil.
Such a visit, it is believed, would bring hope and a renewed sense of security to the beleaguered people of Manipur, assuring them of the government's commitment to their life and livelihood, it mentioned.
As the leader of the nation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi holds the power to shape the destiny of Manipur and illuminate the path towards effective governance and unity among its people, the memorandum stated.
It also expressed hope that the plea will not go unanswered, and that swift and decisive action will be taken to restore normalcy and harmony in Manipur.
