Chief Minister N Biren Singh has extended deepest condolences over the demise of Dr Kyoduwo Richard, a senior resident in the Surgery Department of JNIMS, who passed away on Saturday due to Covid-19 .
A condolence ceremony was held at JNIMS on Sunday, which was also attended by advisor (Health) to CM Dr S Ranjan, principal secretary (Health and Family Welfare) V Vumlunmang, JNIMS director Prof Th Bhimo, officials and doctors of the hospital.
Lauding the sacrifice of Dr Richard; CM Biren, who is also the president of JNIMS Society, further lauded the contributions of frontline workers, while sharing the grief of the bereaved family members of the deceased doctor.
After the solemn function, Biren held a meeting with Covid-19 health workers including doctors and nurses of JNIMS regarding the difficulties faced by them.
The doctors and the staff aired their grievances to the CM, who assured of taking up all necessary steps to resolve all issues as soon as possible.
The Chief Minister then iterated his earlier announcement of providing an ex-gratia of Rs 50 lakh to kin of frontline worker who die in the line of Covid-19 duty.
Dr Kyoduwo Richard Duomai, a senior resident in Urology Department of JNIMS, who was serving at the forefront, succumbed to COVID-19 at JNIMS on May 15.Forty-two years old Dr Richard reportedly contracted COVID-19 while treating positive patients in a COVID ward of the hospital and succumbed to the infectious disease at 7:45 pm due to lack of oxygen at the hospital.
He was from Phuba village and belonged to Poumai Naga tribe of Senapati district.
The deceased doctor was said to be known by one and all for his sacrifice and dedication as a COVID-19 frontline worker and for all the lives he had saved.
In a condolence message, Senapati District Students' Association (SDSA) stated that Dr Richard, s/o Z Pazii was at the forefront of fighting the Covid-19 pandemic for humanity, community and colleagues.
He showed heroism in his professional practice.
He put his own life on the line to take care for COVID patients.
SDSA, people of Senapati, his family and friends have experienced a painful loss on his untimely demise, the association said.
"It is with great sorrow that we are struck with such loss and heartbreak during this unparalleled time from losing not only a true hero but also a good and a thoughtful man.
We know that his demise will not only leave a void in our lives, but in the hearts of all those who knew him.
We are deeply indebted to his service and bravery in this epic fight against a silent but deadly enemy," the condolence message of SDSA further read.
"It is with heartfelt sadness, SDSA sends blessings to all who have been touched by Dr Richard's life and affected by his loss in the community while praying to let his soul rest in peace," it added.
His mortal remains were buried at his native village.
The Poumai Naga Tribe also mourned the demise of Dr Richard.
