Imphal, May 20 2024:
Reacting to a report published in this daily on May 19 under the heading "Militarisation grips border villages in Kamjong'', the Assam Rifles has said that the report paints an unduly alarming picture of Kamjong but overlook the critical role of the armed forces in maintaining security and stability in this volatile border region.
A statement issued by PRO IGAR (South), informed that Assam Rifles (AR), India's oldest paramilitary force, has a long-standing mandate to protect India's northeastern borders.
The deployment of armed forces in Kamjong, Manipur is essential and an operational requirement to prevent the infiltration, movement of contraband, and arms trafficking.
Due to the conflict in Myanmar, there has been an influx of refugees into border villages and possibilities of insurgents entering disguised as refugees have raised security concerns.
Thus, the deployment of AR near border villages aims to thwart nefarious activities and ensure safety of the population in border areas.
The statement further dismissed as baseless allegations that AR personnel have crossed borders and used quadcopters to drop bombs.
Indian security forces are committed to maintaining strict vigilance over the border.
Patrols by security forces are conducted uniformly and impartially, focusing solely on maintaining peace and security, elaborated the PRO, adding that actions of the security forces are guided by the operational requirements and to ensure that illegal activities do not undermine The safety and stability of local communities.
The purpose of the news article is likely to mislead the public, the statement said and added that accurate reporting is crucial to reflect these efforts and avoid sensationalism that could exacerbate an already fragile situation.
