Sky Hospital successfully performs open heart surgery

In yet another remarkable feat Sky Hospital and Research Centre successfully conducted an open heart surgery on a two & half months old baby boy.
The child weighing only 3.9 Kg from Lilong Turel Ahanbi, Thoubal district, bom with Down Syndrome, two holes in the heart a large Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), another hole called Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) was operated successfully on October 8, 2024 at SKY Hospital & Research Centre.
According to a release issued by Sky Hospital, the two heartholes had been causing recurrent heart failure and pneumonia to him.
Little kids with such large holes would not survive if the holes are not closed as soon as possible.
The child was treated for pneumonia and heart failure in a local Medical College Hospital 2 weeks before he was brought to SKY Hospital on October 7, 2024 with a request for open heart surgery.
Although the child was only two & half months old and at high risk, without open heart surgery and closure of the two holes of his heart, he would not survive long.
The child was therefore admitted for the life saving high risk open heart surgery on October 8, 2024 on semi-urgent basis.
The operation took longer than usual for patients undergoing such surgery because of his age and Down Syndrome.
Operation started at 11:00 am and the heart lung machine was off at 12:13 pm.
Operation was completed at 1:00 pm and moved to modem CTVS-fTU on the CTVS-OT Floor.
The child required mechanical ventilator support and heart supports longer than usual paediatric patients because of his age and Down Syndrome.
With very careful and critical care round the clock, the child started recovery and was discharged home in a stable condition 11 days after the date of operation.
Dr L Shyamkishore Singh, Chief Cardiologist of SKY Hospital expressed his happiness and satisfaction on the complete recovery of the child.
Highlighting that recurrent pneumonias or breathlessness could be a manifestation of birth heart defects, he appealed to the public to seek early help from well experienced heart specialists and Heartcare Centre for early accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
