Imphal, June 21 2024:
The Joint Committee on Affected Meetei Victims of Manipur has submitted a memorandum to Inner MP elect Prof Angomcha Bimol Akoijam outlining pressing concerns and legitimate demands on behalf of the displaced Meetei victims.
The memorandum highlighted the severe impact of violence that began on May 3 last year, when Meetei civilians residing in Churachandpur, Moreh, Kangpokpi, Sugnu, Serou, and various other areas bordering Kuki-dominated regions were attacked by Kuki narco-terrorists, resulting in destruction of residential houses, temples, vehicles, and household properties.
Furthermore, there have been numerous instances of human rights violations, including gang rapes, attacks, and the killing of innocent civilians, the memorandum said.
The committee also emphasised the need for resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to restore normalcy in the state.
However, they insist that this resettlement should be precede by removal of Assam Rifles, whom they accused of aiding Kuki militants in the conflict against the Meetei community.
The memorandum also drew attention to the plight of more than 60,000 innocent civilians who have been rendered homeless and income-less due to the ongoing conflict.
The means of livelihood for parents and guardians of internally displaced children have been severely affected, making it impossible for them to afford educational expenses.
Additionally, elderly individuals, particularly those with heart conditions, cancer, and disabilities, are facing immense difficulties in receiving treatment, compounding their daily struggles.
The committee called for special arrangements be made to support these children and elderly individuals.
The committee also demanded proper compensation for the loss and damage caused in the clashes, to be assessed and distributed by the department concerned.
They further insisted on the detection and deportation of illegal immigrants to their place of origin, and implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state at the earliest.
Finally, the committee called for the inclusion of the Meetei community in the Constitution of India as a Scheduled Tribe, arguing that this recognition is crucial for the community's protection and well-being.
The memorandum concluded with a plea to Prof Bimol to look into these matters urgently and ensure that the legitimate demands of the victimised families are addressed and materialised at the earliest.
