Assam Rifles apprehends three persons with brown sugar

Ukhrul, August 07 2023:
The 24 Assam Rifles apprehended three persons for carrying brown sugar during regular checking at Gamnom Check post of Kamjong district on August 4 last (Friday) .
39 soap cases containing brown sugar weighing 460 grams approximately were seized from the three persons while checking the Tata Truck in which they were travelling.
The arrested persons have been identified as Asebe Dime (41 yrs), s/o N Jailang of Saijang Zalukei, Nagaland; Milan Ali (41yrs), s/o Shaban Ali of Karai Kheti Bazaar, Barpeta, Assam and Sanju Choudhury (38 yrs), s/o Ajit Choudhury of Masjid Gali, PO-Noonmati, PS- Chandmari, Guwahati, Assam.
The Assam Rifles handed over the arrested persons along with the seized items to the Shangshak Police Station in Ukhrul district.
According to the Police, a case has been registered at Shangshak Police Station.
The Investigating Officer, SI S Raingam informed that the brown sugar was seized while checking the truck which was ferrying buffaloes towards Dimapur.
It is worth mentioning that buffaloes are mostly transported from Huimin Thana border to Myanmar.
SI S Raingam further informed that a medical check up for the three arrested persons was carried out at the Ukhrul District Hospital on August 5 last and on the same day they were produced in front of the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Ukhrul through video conferencing and were remanded to police custody for seven days till August 11 .
It was further informed that the three will be taken to the Joint Interrogation Cell (JIC), Imphal for further necessary investigation.
Meanwhile SD Phareipam, president of Raizan Traders' Association (RTA), Kamjong District, Manipur lauded the Assam Rifles for their swift action in apprehending drug smugglers.
RTA has been working tirelessly to create an environment of healthy relations in order to boost business across the Indo-Myanmar region of Kamjong district.
However, such illicit trade has hindered livelihood activities for many locals who rely on trading activities, he expressed discontent.
He further asserted that RTA is committed to extend their best co-operation in addressing drug menace from Kamjong district.
The President also strongly condemned such illegal contraband business and demanded stringent punishments for the accused.
