Two-day training programme for tribal farmers held in Chakpikarong

A two-day Community-Led Sensitisation-cum-Training Programme for tribal fanners of Manipur under the STS Component was conducted at Chakpikarong village in Chandel district on Saturday and Sunday.
The programme was organized by Dhanamanjuri University in collaboration with ICAR-National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources, Lucknow, with the objective of creating awareness among farmers on fish conservation, breeding practices and the potential of ornamental fish varieties found in local rivers for livelihood generation.
Resource person Dr Bd Shangningam, Assistant Professor of Dhanamanjuri University, highlighted the importance of the variety of fish species found in Chakpi River, a lifeline of Chandel district, and utilizing them sustainably.
She explained that the training aimed to enhance knowledge among farmers about different fish varieties available in the Chakpi River, and their conservation methods.
She also emphasized that indigenous ornamental fishes found in rivers could provide additional sources of income if properly managed.
The Assistant Professor noted that while fishes are an important source of food, it is equally necessary to conserve species that are facing the threat of extinction.
She stressed the need to learn scientific breeding techniques to protect aquatic resources.
The first day of the programme, held at Chakpikarong Village Community Hall, stressed on the various theories of fish, their conservation, breeding and indigenous ornamental fish resources.
On the second day, the training became practical, with farmers visiting Chakpi River and applying the knowledge gained during the sessions.
Around 76 farmers from the Chakpikarong area participated in the programme.
