JAC demands quick legal action against acid attack

Imphal, December 09 2017: The JAC against the Acid Attack on Mangshatabam Ongbi Meneka has demanded the State Govt and authorities to expedite the legal procedures against the accused and award befitting punishment at the earliest .

Addressing a press meet held today at Manipur Press Club, the JAC's convenor Naorem Mahendra conveyed that the JAC will leave no stone unturned until justice is delivered to the victim of the acid attack that took place on the evening of November 29 .

He also said that the JAC will not make any compromise with a group or any individual and will continue taking every form of possible steps until justice is delivered.

One Md Shahdad alias Tom-ba (23) s/o late Md Azad Ali alias Amu of Hatta Inta Khulla, near Pukhri Achouba of Imphal East had allegedly thrown acid on M Meneka (32) w/o Mangshatabam San-tosh of Soibam Leikai Wang- khei Khunou, Imphal East while the victim was returning home .

The victim is currently undergoing treatment at the RIMS after receiving 10 percent burn on her chin and chest in the acid attack .

Asserting that the Citizens Club, Soibam Leikai has been preventing irate public from carrying out any form of mob justice, like dismantling and burning the house of the accused, the convenor urged all sections of the society and CSOs to leave aside community differences and collec- tively strive to get the justice .

The JAC's co-convenor RK Sanatampha condemned the acid attack while urging the State Government to take up preventive measures before acid attack becomes a trend in the State .

Reminding that acid attack has once been ruled as one of the most heinous crimes by the Supreme Court, she said that the people of Soibam Leikai, especially women, are apprehensive that acid attack might occur again as the alleged accused is notorious for committing crimes repeatedly in the past, including those related to drug abuse and peddling .

Sanatampha further demanded the State government to provide compensation and rehabilitation to the victim.

Muslim Council, Manipur (MCM)'s president Haji Ara-fat urged people to come forward and prevent any form of crimes in the State.
