Along with handing over the task of operation and maintenance to the Transport Department, the LED-based Traffic Signal Lighting System that has already been installed at five different locations of Imphal city for the first phase under Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewable Mission is likely to be functional within the current month.
A reliable source said that the required fund for operation of LED-based Traffic Signal Lighting System has been provided to the MAHUD Department of the State Government by the Union Ministry of Urban Development.

The required State share of the fund for the project has also been provided by the MAHUD Department.
For the first phase, the devises for LED-based Traffic Signal Lighting System has already been installed at five different locations of Imphal including Keishampat Junction, Nityapat Chuthek, GPO Junction, Khuyathong Junction (near PWD) and North AOC Junction.
For the installation of the devices in these five locations, a total sum of Rs 104.98 lakhs has been spend including a sum of Rs 95,31,516 provided by the Ministry of Urban Development and another sum of Rs 9.66 lakh produced by the MAHUD Department as State share.
In the second phase, similar signal lighting devices would be installed at Western Gate of Kangla, mouth of MG Avenue along National Highway 39, Lamlong Junction, Chingamathak Junction and Pureiromba Khongnangkhong near Palace Compound gate.
Though MAHUD Department had submitted proposal for installation of the devices as well along Porompat-Ayangpalli Road and Waheng Leikai-Uripok Junction, the Ministry had turned down the proposal.
To make the Led-based Traffic Signal Lighting System operational at the five spots where the devices have already been installed in the first phase, marking of the Zebra crossing and stop line as well as public awareness on traffic system is to be carried out first.
For this, a Rs 4 lakh proposal has been handed over to the Traffic Police, the source disclosed.
