Imphal, June 20 2026:
Shija Hospitals & Research Institute (SHRI), Manipur, won the Sustainable Hospital Design Award from the Health & Environment Leadership Platform (HELP) India at an international healthcare conference in Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad.
The award honours SHRI's Itocha Block - a 75,519 sq ft, 80-bed climate-responsive facility built for Northeast India's high rainfall, humidity, and power instability.
Serving over 500 OPD patients and 150 dialysis sessions daily, it is among the region's first integrated sustainable healthcare models.
The block features passive cooling, natural daylight optimization, a 50-kW solar system, rainwater harvesting, AAC green construction, and healing-centered design.
Key impacts: 18-25% lower energy use, 40-60% less daytime lighting demand, 55-65 tonnes CO2 avoided yearly, 44-68 lakh litres of water conserved, and 5.5-8 lakh litres of rainwater harvested annually.
The project has cut costs, boosted patient and staff wellbeing, and improved climate resilience.
SHRI is now pursuing IGBC, GRIHA, and NABH Sustainability Certifications to build a Net-Zero Healthcare Campus.
