AMGSU observes 135th Martyrs' Day of Shaheed Subedar Niranjan Singh Chhetri

The All Manipur Gorkha Students' Union (AMGSU) on Monday observed the 135th Martyrs' Day of Shaheed Subedar Niranjan Singh Chhetri at its office in Kanglatongbi, paying homage to one of the earliest Gorkha martyrs who sacrificed his life during the Anglo-Manipur War ofl891.AMGSU in a statement said that Subedar Niranjan Singh Chhetri, a brave Gorkha soldier and freedom fighter, played a significant role in the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891.Having served in the British Army earlier, he later joined the forces of Yuvraj Bir Tikendrajit Singh and fought against British rule.
In recognition of his military experience and courage, he was appointed as a Subedar in the Manipur State Forces.
Members of the union paid floral tributes and remembered the courage, patriotism and sacrifice of Subedar Niranjan Singh Chhetri, whose contribution to Manipur's resistance against British colonial rule continues to inspire generations.
Following the British victory in the war, Subedar Niranjan Singh Chhetri was arrested and subsequently executed by hanging at the Western Gate of Kangla in Imphal on June 8, 1891 .
Remembered as one of the earliest Indian Gorkha martyrs, he is widely regarded as a symbol of bravery, sacrifice and resistance against colonial oppression.
His decision to stand with the people of Manipur and fight against British rule remains a significant chapter in the history of the state and the Gorkha community.
Reaffirming its commitment to preserving and promoting the legacy of Shaheed Subedar Niranjan Singh Chhetri, AMGSU called upon the younger generation to draw inspiration from his patriotism, courage and selfless service to the cause of freedom.
