Tree plantation drives conducted

The Keirak United Development Association (KUDA), Keirak Gram Panchayat and Keirak Apunba Meira Paibi jointly conducted a tree plantation drive at Keirak Awang Salam and Wabagai Cheirao Ching today.
The drive was organised as part of their ongoing tree plantation campaign which began on June 5.The campaign was carried out under the supervision of Thoubal Forest Division and with the help of Range Forest Office, Kakching.
Highlighting the adverse impacts of deforestation on the environment, N Achouba, secretary, KUDA, shared that the Association has been consistently organizing tree plantation drives to mitigate climate change with the cooperation of the State Forest Department.
He assured that KUDA will continue to undertake such initiatives in the future.
Today's tree plantation drive was attended by S Dhanabir, Member, Keirak Wabagai Zilla Parishad; E Shanti Leima, Pradhan, Keirak Gram Panchayat, L Chandrakumar, president, KUDA, staff of Range Forest Office, Kakching, players from Kha Football Academy, Keirak, Keirak Sanatombi High School Relief Camp inmates and local meira paibis.
Separately, the Assam Rifles organized a mass tree plantation drive across Sehlon, Aibol Joupi, New Santal, Old Samtal.
Kovang and Kachinbung in Chandel district to promote environmental conservation and sustainable living.
This initiative aimed to enhance green cover, mitigate climate change impacts, and foster a sense of responsibility towards nature among local communities, said a press release issued by IGAR (S).
The event saw the participation of 124 troops and 50 villagers, including 20 school children.
A total of 875 native tree species were planted, chosen for their ecological benefits and suitability to the local climate.
The drive aimed to raise awareness about the importance of trees in maintaining ecological balance and engaging the local community, especially the youth, in environmental conservation efforts.
This initiative supports the Government's efforts to increase forest cover and combat climate change.
Assam Rifles plans to continue such initiatives and collaborate with local authorities and environmental organizations to ensure the maintenance and growth of the planted trees In addition, Langthabal Mantrikhong Awang Leikai Women Welfare Association planted around 100 tree saplings along Nambul riverbank today in connection with World Environment Day.
According to a statement issued by the Association, the tree plantation effort was a collective initiative of local youths and meira paibis.
The statement has further urged people to refrain from disposing their plastic garbage along the banks of Nambul River.
