Imphal, January 17 2010:
The troops of Red Shield Division launched an operation in Keibul Lamjao areas from Thursday last till yesterday to flush out the underground insurgents from their hideouts there.
A press release from the PIB (Defence Wing) today stated that the presence of the rare species known as Sangai in the protected area was taken advantage of by the banned UG outfits to establish a network of administrative and operational camps and hideouts in that inaccessible area, which they considered their 'safe haven'.
In the operation carried out over two days, eight hideouts were destroyed and a large number of warlike and administrative stores were recovered, the press release informed.

A number of documents detailing the extortion activities being carried out by the groups were also recovered.
In the meantime, the Red Shield Division expressed its 'deep regret' over the death of rifleman Y Raju Singh, who lost his life in an exchange of fire with the UG cadres.
His funeral was conducted with full military honours.
The press release further said that it was the troops' endeavor to cause minimum inconvenience to the local population and expressed gratefulness for their cooperation.
The troops hoped that the destruction of UG hideouts will bring relief to the people of the area.
