According to some of the local residents, six more similar bridges are being constructed over the Waishel Maril.
However, they are not sure whether the bridges are being constructed by the Irrigation and Flood Control Department (IFCD) or some other Departments.
The bridge which caved in today was supposed to facilitate movement of people and vehicles from Sangaiprou Mamang Gram Panchayat to Senapati Loukon.
According to Thiyam Ongbi Sumati, who is member of the Zilla Parishad of the said Gram Panchayat, it is not just a bridge, but also an important structure that would connect Sangaiprou Mamang Gram Panchayat area with places like Ningombam, Langthabal and Hiyangthang.
In connection with the incident, IFC Minister N Biren informed that his Department had not taken up any project or issued work order in connection with construction of the bridge.
Nonetheless, engineers of the Department have already visited the site for inspection, he added.
Meanwhile, Executive Engineer of IFCD Ksh Pritam who was among the team that inspected the collapsed bridge pointed out that manner of constructing the bridge was not in consonance with the work specification of the developmental activities to be taken up by the Department along the Waishel Maril.
Higher officials of Works Department have also clarified that the Department has not sanctioned construction of the bridge in question.
