Imphal, January 17 2010:
A new bridge across Waishel River, constructed by the state Irrigation and Flood Control Department at the later part of the year 2009, collapsed before the same is handed over for public utility.
The bridge constructed across the Waishel Maril (canal) to connect Konjeng Leikai and Senapati Loukon in Imphal west district collapsed today at about 10 am when the labourers took out the materials supporting the Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC).
With regard to the collapse of the bridge before handed over to people, member of the zilla parishad of the area, Th Sumati said that the bridge which collapsed today is among the six bridge constructed across Waishel Maril as a result of the expansion of the Imphal Airport.

The bridge is to connect Langthabal, Ningombsm and Hiyangthang etc.
With the collapse of the bridge the hope of people for some relief to their communication problems has been shattered, she lamented.
Not only this, people are doubtful about the other five bridges.
She also demanded appropriate action against the contractors responsible for the construction of the bridges without delay by the authority concerned.
