Imphal, January 12 2019:
Even as police cut short a protest rally taken out by volunteers of Youth Congress and NSUI Manipur in front of Raj Bhavan against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB)2016 this afternoon, Congress party has submitted a memorandum to Governor Dr Najma Heptulla through the Secretary to the Governor which categorically asserts that the CAB 2016 violates the country's Constitution.
Although the Youth Congress and NSUI volunteers were prevented from marching any farther as police put up steel barricades, five representatives were allowed to submit a memorandum to the Governor which was signed by CLP leader O Ibobi and MPCC president N Haokip.
The memorandum alleged that the Central Government's initiative to pass the CAB 2016 is an attempt to make the North Eastern States a dumping ground for Hindu Bangladeshis.
The Bill is a threat to the cultural and linguistic identity of the indigenous peoples of the North East and it also violate the secular principle of the Constitution by seeking to grant citizenship on the basis of religion, Congress asserted through their memorandum.
