A sudden rise in the water level of Irei river last night caused extensive damages to many houses and school buildings near Noney.
Many of the people rendered homeless have taken refuge in unaffected houses of the area.
According to information received from Noney, water levels of Irei and Iril rivers rose suddenly at about 2 last night.
The people were caught unaware as it was in the night and the strong water current swept away nine school buildings including three RCC buildings and the Bethel Girls' Hostel located at Nongmai Happy valley.
Even as people managed to run away in the nick of time, many domestic animals like cattle and pigs were carried away by the water current.
The overflowing water has also submerged paddy plants extending over an area of more than 100 acres.
A godown used for storing construction materials for the railway projects has also been inundated.
A storehouse for keeping ration items was also damaged.
With electric poles either uprooted or bent, power supply to Noney area has also been disrupted.
Around 800 people have been rendered homeless by the flash flood.
