Foundation Day of BOAT, World Music Day observed

Imphal, June 21 2026:
The Department of Art and Culture, Manipur, today observed the Foundation Day of Bhagyachandra Open Air Theatre (BOAT), Palace Compound, along with World Music Day.
Art & Culture and Tourism Minister Khuraijam Loken, attending as chief guest, said Manipur, though a small State, has a proud legacy in art and culture with many eminent personalities who have earned global recognition.
He stressed that the rich traditions preserved by forefathers must be safeguarded by the present generation for the future.
Highlighting Manipur's diversity of 35 communities with unique customs, Loken said disunity has set back development by 20-30 years.
"We are children of one mother.
Despite differences, we must rebuild brotherhood for a peaceful, progressive Manipur", he said, warning that narrow thinking will only stall growth.
He added that BOAT, inaugurated on June 21, 1996, needs renovation and will be refurbished soon.
Art & Culture Commissioner H Gyanprakash presided while Ukhrul AC MLA Ram Muivah attended as guest of honour.
The programme honoured Shri Shri Balmukunda SSBM-DMC's Vidya Visharad topper Rushal Thonjam of Kongpal Kshetri Leikai with a gold medal.
Chief Minister's Assistance to Artistes 2025-26 was extended to national awardees including Sapam Kullabi (Nat Sankirtan), Shijagurumayum Noyonshakhi (Dance), Dr Yumnam Sadananda (Mime Theatre), Chingtham Ranjit Khuman (Thang-Ta), Kshetrimayum Subadani, Haobam Satyabati, Haobam Nalini (Literature), and several artistes in film, fine arts, folk music, and theatre.

the concert featured pena by Donna Ngairangbam & Party, Meitei Pangal Khunung Eshei by Md Rahim & Reshma Shahni Mayangmayum, Manipuri folk by Ningthoujam Nganthoibi Devi & Party, guitar recital by Oinam Jiransan, tabla solo by Heikham Sanaton, classical vocal by Nancy Yaithengbam, and Matam Eshei by AMIK .
