Training programme on scientific cultivation of Makhana held at Wangoo

A one-day fanners' training programme on the scientific cultivation of makhana was organised at Wangoo Nungai Loukon in Kakching district on Monday under the Central Sector Scheme for Development of Makhana in Manipur.
The programme aimed to enhance farmers' livelihoods by promoting scientific cultivation practices and creating awareness about the opportunities available under the Makhana Development Scheme.
A large number of farmers engaged in makhana cultivation participated in the training.
The event was graced by Dr Kh Premlata Devi, Senior Scientist and Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Thoubal, as the chief guest.
In her address, she high lighted the nutritional value and health benefits of makhana and encouraged farmers to adopt scientific cultivation techniques to improve productivity and increase their income.
Moirangthem Kunjakeshwor Singh, a progressive fanner from Wangoo, attended the programme as the guest of honour.
He stressed the importance of dedication and commitment among farmers towards adopting improved cultivation practices and urged them to actively participate in the development of makhana farming with support from the concerned departments.
The programme was presided over by Kh Malenganba Meitei, District Officer, Horticulture and Soil Conservation, Thoubal.
In his presidential address, he elaborated on the objectives and significance of the Central Sector Scheme for Development of Makhana, stating that the initiative would play a vital role in improving fanners' livelihoods, increasing production and promoting sustainable agricultural development in Manipur.
During the technical session, Dr Premlata delivered a detailed lecture on scientific makhana cultivation, covering important aspects such as field preparation, crop management, pest and disease control, and post-harvest handling.
Another resource person, Dr W Jiten Singh, Farm Manager, KVK Thoubal, presented a lecture on the "Popularisation and Scope of Makhana Cultivation in Manipur" .
He highlighted the immense potential of makhana farming in the state and discussed strategies for expanding its cultivation as a profitable livelihood option for farmers.
The programme concluded with an interactive session during which farmers shared their experiences and sought clarifications from the experts on various aspects of cultivation.
Participants expressed their appreciation for the training programme and reaffirmed their commitment to adopting scientific cultivation practices for improving Makhana production.
