Imphal, May 20 2024:
Aggrieved by shortage of teachers and infrastructural inadequacies, students of Manipur College staged a protest demonstration near Pishum Thong along Mayai Lambi today.
The college students formed a chain and sat in protest along Mayai Lambi a little past 11:30 am raising slogans such as "Recruit the requisite teachers", "Let us study" and "We condemn the Education Department's lack of accountability" among others.
The sit-in protest caused inconvenience to motorists, who had to turn around and take other routes.
Later, Singjamei police personnel arrived at the spot and spoke with the students.
However, both sides failed to reach an understanding and the protest was still ongoing at the time of filing this report.
Speaking by the sideline of the protest, Ningthoujam Mamta, magazine secretary, Manipur College Students' Union stated that the protest was staged due to the failure of the State authorities to address the grievances raised by the students concerning shortage of teachers and poor infrastructure of the College.
Stating that a part of the college campus has been occupied by a relief centre, she said that portions of several department buildings were also dismantled a long time ago with the assurance that new structures will be constructed.
With the assurance remaining unfulfilled till date, they had to search for empty classrooms to conduct classes, which in turn led to delay in lectures, cancellation of classes and even practical sessions and other similar inconveniences, Mamta lamented.
Addressing the shortage of teachers in many departments of Manipur College, she said it is unfair to the students who have to appear for the upcoming BSc/BA 3rd and 6th semester examinations from June 16 .
Thus, she urged the State Government to address the issues of shortage of teachers and poor infrastructure and provide relief to the students of Manipur College.
