With preparatory works for the next year's Lok Sabha election already put into motion, the Election Commission of India has instructed the State's Chief Electoral Officer and the Joint Chief Electoral Officer not to take charge or handle any other departments except the Election Department.
The ECI made this instruction so that the two top officers can focus on election related works in view of the parliamentary election scheduled next year.
The ECI has directed that the CEO and Joint CEO should relinquish all additional charges by December 31, informed an official source.
Meanwhile, a process of updating electoral rolls is going on along with registration of youngsters who would reach 18 years of age by January 1 next year.
The final electoral roll would be published on January 6.As for the new voters registered anew, a supplementary list would be released.
As per the draft electoral roll published earlier, the total number of voters in Manipur has crossed 17 lakh.
The total number of polling stations has also increased to 2662 .
In the meantime, office of the CEO has taken up necessary measures to issue PVC voter cards to all registered voters ahead of the Lok Sabha election, added the source.
