Issues confronting education in Manipur discussed

A discussion on the theme 'Issues Confronting Education in Manipur' was organized by All India Students' Federation (AISF), Manipur State Council at Manipur Press Club here today with Prof MC Arun, Department of Anthropology, Manipur University acting as the moderator.
Addressing the gathering, Laishram Lenin, member of AISF Manipur State Council opined that several factors like present turmoil and volatile law & order situation in the State including unwarranted acts by authorities concerned of school, college and university have been affecting students severely.
He stressed on the need for discussing such problems collectively to overcome it and appealed to the concerned authorities to look into the problems cropped up in connection with the admission process in Manipur University and grievances being faced by teachers of aided schools and colleges who are getting lower salary that also not consistently.
While speaking on the topic 'Problems in Manipur University', Prof Dr Salam Opendro, MU said that around 15, 000 students sought admission in the central university in a year but only a total of 1279 students enrolled in various courses due to lesser number of seat.
He asserted that the problem of lesser seats encountered by students who are willing to pursue master degree courses would be solved to some extent once DM College is upgraded to university level.
Several other outstanding problems faced by aided high schools, aided elementary schools, COHSEM and BSEM were also discussed in length during the programme.
