16 defaulters arrested, due bills over Rs.2 lakh collected

A minor girl was victimized today by officials of the electricity department in its drive against default electricity consumers.
Unable to find any of the responsible members of the family, the electricity team pounced on the child exposing her as a defaulter and forced her to stand behind a placard inscribed with "Mei Kotpa Imung-ni" .
The incident is a product of the drive announced by N Sarat, Chief Engineer of the state Electricity Department against default electricity consumers.
In the drives, power theft was discovered in great evidence at Yaiskul.
The house where the team found the minor girl was among the defaulting consumers detected.
The drive team, to its credit detected a consumer with a connection of a general consumer line and as well as a VIP line but owing dues of Rs.30,000.The general line was disconnected and the VIP line was left untouched.
Following repeated queries the VIP line was finally disconnected.
It was found that many consumers in the area were receiving power supply from VIP lines.
Even saloons in the area were found enjoying uninterrupted power supply from VIP lines.
The department's drive was conducted in Nagamapal, Lalambungmakhong, Uripok Khaidem Leikai, Keishampat Thiyam Leikai, Yaiskul Police Lines, and Khurai Chaithabi Leirak.
Chief Engineer, N Sarat, in a briefing to reporters in his office, said that the drive against defaulting consumers and unauthorized connection was launched as per announcement made earlier.

He said, the drives were conducted under the supervision of three executive engineers in the areas covered by AIT-II EE, AIT-III EE and MD-EE.
The Chief Engineer said that 16 defaulters were arrested.
Registered consumers who had not cleared due bills for three months were also included in the drive.
Some consumers cleared their due bills to the drive team, said Sarat adding that Rs.2,36,045 was collected in today's drive.
He added that Rs.1,20,000 was collected from 15 consumers under AIT-II EE, Rs.80,045 from 12 consumers under MD-EE and Rs. 36,000 from 13 consumers under AIT-III EE.
The CE said that the drive will continue till all default consumers are apprehended.
It may be mentioned that the knee jerk motion of the electrictity department is the result of the PIL registered by three emminent citizens.
