DC makes bulk purchase of inmates products

Thoubal district deputy commissioner Ahanthem Subhash informed that around Rs 3 lakh worth of products such as 'Kouna' (water reed) items, candles and incense sticks made by displaced people staying in relief camps at Rice Research Centre, Khangabok and District Sports Complex, Wangjing Kodompokpi have been sold till date.
On Friday, a team comprising DC Subhash and Manipur Handlooms and Handicrafts Development Cooperation (MHHDC) Limited staff visited relief camps opened in Thoubal district for bulk purchase of the products made by the camp inmates along with checking the manufacturing process.
Speaking to media persons after buying the products at the Khangabok relief camp, Subhash informed that the district administration after conducting skill training programmes for the relief camp inmates provided the required equipment and raw materials to start manufacturing the items.
All the money generated from selling these items have been handed over to the inmates, he said, adding that Friday's visit is inaccordance to the MHHDC communicating interest in buying items worth Rs 29,330 from the inmates.
A Subhash continued that till now products with total value of Rs 2,93,260 have been sold including 'Kouna' handicrafts, candles and incense sticks worth approximately Rs 1,58,260, Rs 1.3 lakh and Rs 5000 respectively, thus providing an income generation opportunity for the relief camp inmates.
He also exhorted the displaced people to take advantage of their skill development training for generating income, while assuring that the district administration will extend all possible help.
