AR organise Major Bob Khathing Memorial Cup

The first edition of Major Bob Khathing Memorial Cup organised by the 17th Assam Rifles kicked off today at Tangkhul Naga Long ground in Ukhrul with the participation of nine teams from the district.
On Tuesday, 17AR officer-in-command Lt.Colonel Om Prakash inaugurated the Major Bob Khathing Memorial Cup while encouraging the players and youths to give emphasis on sports in his inaugural address at TNL ground.
He also distributed footballs to the participating teams.
In the inaugural match, Awontang drubbed Wino Bazaar by a margin of 5-1.Awontang netted three goals in the first half totally outplaying its rivals�which managed the lone goal via penalty in the second half.
In spite of the football trophy being held in memory of a magnanimous personality, the tourney was reduced to low-key affairs with no professional clubs taking part in the first edition.
Late Major Bob Kathing was an illustrious military officer, one among the first Nagas to be commissioned in Indian Army, who later assumed many political appointments in the northeast and served as India's ambassador to Yangoon (Rangoon), Myanmar.
