Trade unions' strike affects normal life

Imphal, February 28 2012:
The 12-hour general strike called by the Coordinating Body of Trade Unions, Manipur in support to the nation-wide agitation jointly announced by the Central Trade Unions namely BMS, INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, AICCTU, UTUC, TUCC, LPF and SEWA ended peacefully with no reports of any untoward incidents from any part of the state.
However, as a result of the general strike, normal life in many remained affected with number of vehicles plying in the roads of Imphal and elsewhere reduced drastically.
All the inter-state and inter-district bus services also came to a halt.
All shops, markets and other business establishments also remained down their shutters for the day.
Attendance in government offices is also reported to be thin.
However, on HSLC and Higher Secondary Examinations were normally conducted as the student examinees have been exempted from the purview of the general strike.

As support of the strike called, around 400 non-local rickshaw pullers, mutias and other workers participated in a sit-in protest at Dharmashala, Thangal Bazaar today from 10 am to 2 pm.
The protestors wore maroon coloured half jackets during the demonstration.
As many as 75 trade unions, associations and federations in Manipur under the joint banner of Co-ordinating Body of Trade Unions, Manipur supported the strike.
