In a landmark verdict, the former Peruvian President Alverto Fujimori was convicted and sentenced to 25 years for human rights violation by the Peruvian Supreme Court on April 7 last.
A three judge panel of the Peruvian Supreme Court found Fujimori guilty on charges involving serious human rights violations.
After years of evading justice, Fujimori is finally being held to account for some of his crimes.
"With the ruling, and its exemplary performance during the trial, the Peruvian court has shown the world that even former heads of state cannot expect to get away with serious crimes" said a press statement of Secretary, United NGOs Mission, Manipur (UNM-M), U Nabakishore.
The statement said that this landmark decision fits within a global trend of increasing accountability for former heads of state.
UNM-M have serious concern that the situation in Manipur may lead to the situation that of Peru if the state leaders do not act properly and in wisdom.
