Imphal, April 01 2009:
Drawing the attention of the state government and NGOs towards the corrupt practices which brought about failures in the construction of road and bridges along the Old Cachar Road (NH-53A), the Zeliangrong Students' Union Manipur (ZSUM) and the public rejected the sub standard construction of Nungleiband-Leimatak Bridge which is under construction.
The ZSUM inspected the 2.5 crore budgeted Leimatak bridge of special contractor Lakpa Site finding sub standard components used in the construction.
A statement of ZSUM issued by its State secretary Majabung Gangmei, said that the infrastructure fell apart when tested with hammer and even hand.
This reveals that the bridge if completed would collapse sooner than later giving perilous threat and loss of lives and properties.
The students demolished the base pillars which could not hold firm due to lack of quality in the components.
ZSUM statement said that the entire length of the Old Cachar Road has not shown any sign of work except for the Ganglon village area.
The crores of expenditure being spent on Bishnupur-Rengpang Road (NH-53) via Khoupum valley have not yielded any result so far.
The ZSUM claimed that the EE PWD of Bishnupur District has been manipulating things corruptibly and also called for an appropriate action against him for corruption.
