Imphal, April 01 2009:
Decrying the sub-standard manner of road and bridge construction works along the Old Cachar Road (NH 53-A), the Zeliangrong Students' Union Manipur has sought attention of the State Government as well as NGOs.
A press release issued by ZSUM informed that sub-standard manner of construction of Nungleiband-Leimatak bridge has been rejected by the public.
Conveying that it has inspected the Leimatak bridge, the student body said that the concrete work of the bridge fell apart when tested by hammers.
As such, the bridge is most likely to collapse sooner rather than later even though the bridge is yet to be completed.
The students have demolished the base pillars after observing the total absence of quality.
The ZSUM during the recent inspection also found that the entire length of the Old Cachar Road has not shown any sign of works except the portion at Ganglon village area.
Moreover, crores of rupees being spent for Bishnupur-Rengpang road via Khoupum valley have not yielded any result so far.
Accusing the EE of PWD Bishnupur Division, the ZSUM demanded that the EE should be pulled.
Further observing that BDO Khoupum was not at the station during their inspection visit, the student body said that it will not tolerate the prevailing state of affairs.
Appealing to the authority concerned to redress all these wrong-doings at the earliest, the ZSUM warned of public agitation in case of failure on the part of the authority to take up positive actions.
