Imphal, July 31 2013:
Expressing shock over the recent disclosure by the Home Ministry that a total of 555 cases of alleged fake encounters by security forces were registered by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) during the period April 1, 2009 to Feb 15, 2013, the Popular Front of India, Manipur State has demanded CBI probe into all fake encounter cases.
A statement issued by the Popular Front of India, Manipur State today rued that fake encounter issue has never been dealt seriously by the successive Governments although various human rights activists and groups have raised concern over the matter down the last few years.
Maintaining that the existence of some draconian laws like AFSPA and UAPA have acted as a tool to protect security forces, the statement said such actions by the Govts prove that they were least interested in punishing the culprits and bringing an end to extra judicial killings.
Pointing out that the encounter killing case of Ishrat Jahan was proved to be fake only after the CBI took the charge of the investigation, the front demanded the Govt to initiate CBI probe into all encounter cases while also urging immediate repeal of draconian laws and payment of compensation to the families of the victims.
