Imphal, August 27 2010:
Ahead of the country-wide general strike being called by the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) on September 7 on the demand of price control, a State level convention would be held tomorrow at Kuki Inn here.
The main issues of the general strike and the convention are escalating prices of goods and implementation of labour laws.
Speaking to media persons at Hotel Imphal today, AITUC deputy general secretary H Mahadevan pointed out that the principle of equal work, equal pay enshrined in the Constitution is not followed in the country.
He also accused the Government of India of misusing several lakhs of people by giving them employment on contract basis.
Public Distribution System meant for ensuring essential commodities to millions of BPL families has become a centre of corruption.
Saying that prices of all essential commodities have escalated by 17 per cent all over the country, Mahadevan said that the AITUC has been pursuing several demands for the last many years like effective control on prices of goods, proper implementation of labour laws, provision of jobs to unemployed youth, safeguarding rights of employees, extension of social security cover to labourers, job protection etc.
However, the Government has not fulfilled any of these demands.
The scheduled country wide general strike on September 7 would be jointly organised by INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, TUCC, VTUC, AICCTU and the National Industrial Federation.
