Imphal, April 22 2016 :
Sky Hospital and Research Centre successfully conducted an open heart surgery on April 3, on a 49-years old patient.
Disclosing the details of the surgery in a press meet held today at the hospital, chairman of Sky hospital Dr Shyamkishore Lairikyengbam said the patient Akoijam Sanahal of Mongshangei was admitted to the hospital on March 31 with a large hole in the heart also referred to as congenital heart defect.
Dr Shyamkishore added that the latest technique to detect heart defect which is very popular in other western countries and other parts of India Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) was conducted to diagnose the exact location and size of the hole in Sanahal's hear.
TEE is a test that produces pictures using high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to make detailed pictures of the heart and the arteries that lead to and from it.
It is remarkable feat of the Sky Hospital to conduct such open heart surgery to an adult by Dr Shyamkishore and his team.
He added that such heart defect if diagnosed in early age, treatment and surgery are much simpler and recovery is faster.
TEE test facility is available in the Sky Hospital, he said.
Sanahal is recovering well and will be discharged the next day, he said.
Further he stated that heart defects have limited life expectancy and early diagnosis and treatment is a must.
Dr Shyamkishore added that the hospital will continue to serve to provide ultimate heart care to people of Manipur.
While Akoijam Sanahal expressed his gratitude towards the team of Dr Shyamkishore for offering the best service of heart care facilities.
He added that his illness could not be well diagnosed and detected by other heart specialist.
It is unfortunate that none of the previous doctors and surgeons guided him to detect the ailment.
