Imphal, April 22 2016 :
The BJP Manipur has today demanded befitting punitive action against the officer and police personnel involved in alleged wanton action yesterday at Moirang which resulted in injuries to many persons including Chairperson and five Members of Moirang Municipal Council (MMC) .
Addressing a press meet today at the party office, BJP Manipur president Thounao-jam Chaoba said that the party views the incident at Moirang yesterday seriously.
A high level meeting of the party strongly condemned the incident and decided to launch different forms of agitation.
He said that the BJP Councillors have today submitted a complaint to the DGP urging him to register an FIR with the CID (Crime Branch) for investigation of the incident and to take befitting action against the police personnel involved in the incident.
Chaoba said that the party will seek legal recourse if the DGP fails to take any positive steps to the demands apart from launching different forms of agitation.
The State BJP president further said that many questions remain unanswered regarding the implementation of NFS Act which is set to come into force from April 25 in the State.
Even as the guidelines of the Act empower Panchayat members and members of urban local bodies to determine and give final approval of the eligible households and distribution of ration cards, the concerned DSO of Bish-nupur has issued a notice saying that the ration cards would be distributed after due consultation with the MLAs concerned, he said.
Whether the Govt has appointed fair price shop agents for the purpose is also questionable, he said while demanding the Govt to come out with a white paper on the matter.
It is very unfortunate that the local MLA of Moirang AC has interfered in the distribution of ration cards, Chaoba said.
He added that the MLA should rather contest Pancha-yat or urban local body elec- tions if he is so keen or interested in the petty issues like distribution of PDS items or old age pension.
It may be mentioned that a confrontation ensued between the BJP councillors and their supporters on one side and the police on another side when the former party protested the distribution of ration card at Moirang Purit Mandop yesterday.
The BJP councillors and their supporters were demanding the distribution of the ration card either at the Moirang SDO office or the MMC office.
12 persons including BJP councillors were injured when police opened tear gas shells on them and baton charged the protesters yesterday.
Meanwhile, Th Chaoba said that the BJP will field its candidates in all the wards of Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) election slated to be held on June 2 .
Regarding the charge-sheet filed by the CBI against four persons including Okram Henry in connection with seizure of drugs at Airport, Th Chaoba demanded the resignation of CM O Ibobi from his post on moral ground.
