Imphal, January 12 2014 :
The Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution Labourers' Welfare Association (CAF&PDLWA) today held a one day general conference at Public Theatre, Nambol.
Deputy Labour Commissioner E Tomba, CAF&PDLWA president K Joy, AMUCO president Dr Y Mani Khuman, social scientist Dr Dhanabir Laishram and AITUC secretary L Sotinkumar attended the conference as presidium members.
Many speakers underscored the need to form a common platform for workers and labourers in order to fight for the rights entitled to them.
They also made a strong point against holding back wages of labourers, giving extra work loads, arbitrary dismissal, deduction of wages, denying minimum wages and other rights etc.
The speakers expressed serious concern over the rapid pace of privatisation of public sector undertakings.
Deputy Labour Commissioner E Tomba dwelt on myriad problems faced by labourers in Manipur.
It is crucial for labourers to find out what benefits they can obtain from various welfare schemes taken up by Government.
He hinted at the possibility of opening a welfare centre by way of organising a campaign of fund drive.
The Deputy Labour Commissioner assured that he would look into the possibility of opening facilitation centres for workers in every district.
Moreover, concerned authorities would be consulted in order to formulate a policy under which workers engaged in loading and unloading activity are regularised.
The workers need to urge the Government so that the proposed policy becomes a reality.
Real progress of Manipur means advancement of people in the field of knowledge and creativity.
High rise buildings and expensive vehicles cannot be counted as symbols of progress, stated Dr Dhanabir Laishram.
Difference seen in the socio-economic status of different communities is a result of the dirty electoral game played by politicians.
Later, a booklet entitled 'Rules and regulations in working place' was released.
Moreover uniforms, member ID cards and masks were distributed to workers.
Moreover, new office bearers of the association were sworn in.
