Langol residents give thumbs down

Around 400-500 residential patta owners and farmers of Langol in Imphal have on Thursday expressed in unanimity, their objection of the construction of National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Langol-Lamphelpat area in a Public Hearing held under the direction of the Imphal West deputy commissioner, A.Ibocha.
In a three and half-hour hearing session at the Imphal West DC complex, residents of Langol area, comprising of various walks of life presented to the official their stiff opposition for the construction of NIT at Langol area.
Lalpi Vaiphei, a resident of the area who also runs an orphanage in the vicinity told the officials that, Langol is also known as 'small Manipur' due to its multi-ethnic composition, and wiping out it could be tantamount to inviting communal flare-up.
He also said that, the area outlined for the proposed construction of NIT is a home to many orphanages, where numbers of parentless children are raised.
He also added that it would be wise if the government shift the NIT to other proper places.
.LMeghachandra, a farmer of the area told the officials not to obliterate the arable land of the area while expressing his appreciation for the construction of a prominent institution like NIT in Manipur.
The chairperson of the JAC for the protection of 91 Meitei Langol Resident and Patta land, Kim Gangte while appealing the officials to reach to an acceptable solution, said that due to the lack of planning and vision of the State Govt, the people of the state are confronted with economical and mental problems.
It may be recalled here that an independent National Fact Finding team from the Centre under the leadership of John Dayal has held a public hearing on December 19 on the proposed construction of National Institute of Technology (NIT) at the cost of destroying wetland and residential areas of Langol, Imphal West.
