Imphal, December 29 2012:
Assam Rifles have claimed that AR troops assisted the police in recovering the bodies of two villagers shot dead inside the jungle of Kongkan, close to International border on December 27 .
The troops are also putting in effort to maintain calm in the area after the incident, said a PRO IGAR (S) release.
The troops alongwith police personnel ventured inside the thick jungle after villagers heard several gunshots there, said the release.
In the incident, two Tangkhul villagers of Kongkan (near Kamjong/Chassad) were allegedly shot dead by insurgents.
The villagers had gone to the jungle for hunting.
The incident assumed significance especially in light of the present unrest prevailing in the State after the Chandel incident, opined the release.
The AR Bn at Kamjong, Chassad requested the villagers to refrain from violent activities and remain peaceful.
The AR troops later provided protection to about eight valley trader families who are working in Chassad.
Frontal organizations in Ukhrul, the district administration, police and Assam Rifles are coordinating efforts for peaceful resolution of the situation.
Assam Rifles on the other-hand, continues to maintain calm and peace in the area and coordinate and assist various agencies in resolving the issue as in the past.
It is pertinent to mention that during the Naga-Kuki ethnic clashes of 90s, Kamjong Chassad was an oasis of peace where the three ethnic groups Nagas, Kukis and Meiteis coexisted peacefully and do so even now, added the press release.
