Imphal, December 29 2012:
Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam, who is also in charge of Home portfolio, has disclosed that the State government is planning to use State Forces for the protection of National Highways in the State.
While speaking to a few select media persons at Congress Bhawan here today, Gaikhangam said that so far, the State government has not been able to use State forces for the protection of National Highways due to shortage of manpower.
But to solve this problem the Home Department has decided to recruit 2000 more police personnel very soon.
Gaikhangam pointed out that at present there are not even sufficient security forces to guard the police stations in all the district head quarters of the State and a number of security personnel are yet to be equipped with the required weapons.
So, they are not even fully equipped to guard themselves let alone guarding the police stations or protection of the National Highways.
The Dy Chief Minister asserted that there is an urgent need to protect the police stations and deployed adequate security personnel for the Loktak downstream project and the construction of railway lines.
For this reason and also for the protection of National Highways passing through the State, 2000 police personnel are to be recruited, he explained.
Noting that crime against women has been rising in Manipur like in other parts of the globe, the Home Minister reiterated that the State police have been given strict instruction for checking recurrence of such unwanted incidents.
While pointing out that rapists in Arab countries are hanged to death, Gaikhangam also emphasized the need to follow similar rule so that incidents of rape and crime against women and children could be reduced.
